HOW TO FIND

How to Find Hospice Care

Serenity Hospice Care Provider knows that navigating final stages of life are very detailed and significant. Medical care questions are at the forefront of everyone’s mind, yet there is so much more to planning end-of-life. A medical prognosis may give the patient and family tangible parameters within which to say their goodbyes, get family business behind them and settle into the sacred space of the final journey, but with terminal illness small changes may signal the onset of a change in condition and when this occurs, family members will want to know.

When selecting hospice care, it is important to know the philosophy of care as well as the actual services the facility or in-home care each hospice provider offers.

Here’s a quick checklist on how to determine what hospice care facility or service is best suited to your loved one and your family:

  • Make sure your hospice provider is state recognized and a member of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO).
  • Verify that the hospice is Medicare certified. This is important because Medicare sets the baseline requirements for quality care.
  • Check this by asking the hospice to identify their 16 core and auxiliary services.
  • Some samples of core services include bereavement counseling, nutritional services and doctor services. Auxiliary services including continuous home care, physical therapy, medication administration and household services.
  • Make sure the hospice you have selected accepts your insurance.
  • Know who the owners of the hospice facility or agency are and check their background.
  • Take time to get to know the administrator. Her or she will be important throughout the process.
  • It is a good idea to know where the on-call nurses reside. The closer they are to you, the easier it is for them to get to you in a timely manner.

  • Come prepared questions when you interview your prospective hospice.
  • Here are some basic questions
  • How long have they been in business?
  • What services to they provide?
  • How often does a nurse or hospice staff visit?
  • What are their accreditation?
  • How is their staff trained?
  • What quality standards govern their facility or in-home services?
